cancer – day 800

This morning when I woke up and opened the curtains, get this, Old Faithful was right there, right out my front windows! I had to walk over and see the first geyser of the morning, so I got a later start out than I had planned. I had thought I’d get up at six and get going, but since I gave myself this little break to go see Old Faithful again, I didn’t get on the road until 8AM. With soooo many miles still to go, that’s not looking like such a great decision. But it was RIGHT there! How could I not go see Old Faithful start its day?!?

And then . . . southern Idaho. OMG, can we saying boring in 50 different languages? It was like the drive between Salt Lake City and Reno, nothing nothing nothing for a couple hundred miles.

Who knew central Oregon is so amazingly beautiful and various? After a completely boring and blah drive across southern Idaho (don’t do it if you can avoid it), I didn’t have high expectations for the drive across Oregon except that the most direct route was going to be on smaller, lower speed limit roads.

But wow oh wow, but the Oregon drive was utterly amazing. It started out like home, so I was like, la-de-dah, seen this a thousand times. This was in the Blue Mountains and Malheur National Forest. It was seriously just like El Dorado National Forest where my house is, and after an hour or two of driving through this forest, I was starting to think this route choice was a mistake, slow and just like home. Especially since the road had a 35-foot vehicle length restriction and the turns were incredibly tight even for my little RV. But then all of a sudden it turned into volcanic rock, and lo and behold, it certainly no longer looks like home! Then it was back to forest land, and ranch land that looks just like the drive from Georgetown to Cool at home. But THEN I got into the John Day Fossil Beds area, and it was UNBELIEVABLE! Sheer cliffs up both sides of the road, so tight I was praying the whole way not to have to cross paths with an RV going the opposite direction. Holy cow, was that ever an amazing place. I HAVE to go back there some day when I’m not in a cross-country rush!!
