cancer – day 364
So the reason the 4 hours in the car to drive to an 8-minute oncologist appointment was worth it yesterday has nothing to do worth my treatment, but it’s one of those things that give the word serendipity meaning.
The annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is coming up in two weeks in Sacramento. Last year I heard about it just a couple days before the race/walk, which was just a couple days before my surgery, and I didn’t go. But when I saw the flyer at my doctor’s office yesterday, I took one right away, and, not noticing the date of the event (which was right there on the cover, chemo-brain!), I asked the receptionist if she knew the date of the event. She told me it was May 9, and then she said, if I was going, that she had a woman who really wanted to be in the walk but who needed someone to push her wheelchair. I knew I wanted to do the walk this year, and I also knew that if I didn’t do something to force myself to commit that when the day came I wouldn’t be so willing to drag myself out of bed at 5AM, spend the fours hours in the car to be there, or to walk even one mile in comfortable shoes cushioning my neuropathy feet. But, still unsure, I told the receptionist I might call her about it but I didn’t commit anything. But, after my eight minutes of fame with the oncologist, I stopped back at the reception desk and gave her my card so they can e-mail/call me, and told her I could help the woman with the wheelchair. And, get this, the woman’s name is Susan. I think that’s a neat little coincidence.
I’m kind of nervous now about the neuropathy in my hands and feet and doing the walk, but offering to help just seemed like the right thing to do and I wouldn’t dream of rescinding the offer. But now I’m thinking it may be a really good idea to ask my mom if she wants to come out to do the walk with us. She had such a great experience with the breast cancer walk in Atlanta that Chainalytics did, I think she’d really feel good coming out to do a cancer walk with me. Too bad it’s only a couple weeks notice and over 2,000 miles for her to travel. But, you never know, Moms are funny that way. 😉
I just checked the online registration site. Holy cow, did you know someone dies of breast cancer every 75 SECONDS???
