cancer – day 229

I had the most wonderful lunch with Kim today. She’s my yoga instructor. I haven’t gotten to spend a lot of time with her, but over the weeks there have been a lot of really vulnerable moments when she asked how I was doing and we talked about where I was in treatment or whatever. And so she felt like a good friend even though I didn’t know her well, and we wanted to get together and have lunch before I left for Christmas. We just had really great conversation about really interesting life stuff. Her sister has bipolar disorder, and Kim went through some really trying times with the Christian church when she was coming out about being gay in her late teens. She’s just very spiritual and has a great energy about her and it was really, really nice to spend time with her before I left.

She gave me a little card that was so beautiful, about how my life is moving from winter into spring. And she made a point of telling me again at lunch that she just finds me so inspirational. It’s really something, that so many people have used that particular word to describe me. I never would have thought it. And with the cancer, all I’ve thought I’ve been doing is surviving, and not always gracefully at that. But lots of people have said how inspiring I am, even though I don’t have a clue how it happens. But what a wonderful thing to be to people. I hope it continues somehow.
