cancer – day 102
I’m shedding hair faster than my cats, I swear, and we buzzed my hair off last night so now it’s just all these little short hairs getting all over my shirt like pet fur. But, not for long, I’m starting to see little bald patches, tiny little spots so far, none grown together to make any big patches yet. At this point, I’d just as soon get it over with and be completely bald, rather than having to brush the little hairs off myself all the time.
Then again, I’m glad to be brushing off these little pieces of hair rather than clumps of the 18+ inches of hair I had before this started. I really didn’t realize how long it was until I started cutting it shorter and shorter. I cut off about ten inches the first time, then at least another five, then a few more, before Mark buzzed off what was left last night. So that’s something to be thankful for, I guess. Little pieces of hair all over my clothes, instead of super long ones that would be even more depressing to pick off my shirt.
It’s not that I mind being bald for some period of time. Actually, I think it’s going to be kind of fun getting to change wigs and looks between huge extremes as frequently as I want without having to dye my hair or cut it or grow it out. I was shopping online on Saturday and found this great wig website and ordered a couple more things for the bald phase of my treatment . . . more on that later when I have pics to post.
I don’t know if I blogged about this earlier this weekend, but I keep thinking about this comment someone made to me . . . that maybe it’s a good thing that I’m having so many side effects, because maybe that means my body really is very healthy and is fighting the chemo drugs like mad just like the body should. That’s the most positive perspective on chemo side effects that I’ve ever heard. I wonder if they’ve done any medical research about that?
Here’s something else pretty cool . . . my niece Hannah, who is nine, decided many months ago, well before my cancer diagnosis, to grow her hair out to have it cut and donate her hair to Locks of Love so someone somewhere can have a human hair wig. She got the cut just a few days ago, and my dad e-mailed a photo of her and one of both she and my nephew, Cameron, today. She looks so cute with her fashionable little cut, and her hair still reaches her chin, it’s certainly much, MUCH longer than my hair is today!
So of course, now that I’ve figured out how to add photos to my blog postings, I had to add a couple pics of me with my current “do.” I’ve been wearing my favorite pink hat most of the time, to keep myself from itching at my head all day. At least now with the hair really, really short, it doesn’t feel so icky to touch anymore. It felt all gross and dirty, even while I was washing it, it felt like it had a four-days-camping-without-water kind of feel to it. Ever heard of “grunge” as a style? I was there, baby, and it’s not me.
So here’s the pic of me with the super short buzz. All I can say is . . . I am not butch enough to pull off this look!
