Breast Cancer Peer Counseling
I was pretty excited last Monday. I heard back from the Breast Cancer Network of Strength about applying for their peer counseling program and they wanted to schedule a phone interview. I was totally excited when I got that e-mail, I think it was pretty amusing to my parents to see me so excited about becoming a counselor.
It felt a little silly to be so excited about getting a phone interview, because they must surely do phone calls with everyone and they surely want as many volunteers as possible but they maybe have to screen them out because they can’t train everyone and they do choose each individual that they take in their counselor training. But on paper I probably seem like a good enough candidate and my references were solid, though I don’t know if they called any of my references.
Anyway, the interview call was today. She asked me about my diagnosis and treatment, and then why I want to become a counselor and stuff like that.I just answered her really honestly, and she was great. After like seven minutes she said she was going to recommend me to the selection committee for training right away and then I would take my certification exam in January.
So the interview was a breeze, but I haven’t formally been selected yet. I was excited right after, but then I had to jump right back in at work and I had an oncologist appointment this afternoon so I couldn’t dally congratulating myself. J
Oh, and then I was right on time for the blood draw and oncologist appointment . . . if I had been in California. Darn time zones. But they didn’t fine me $50 like the oncologist in California would, which is nice. We just rescheduled for next week, no big deal.
