cancer – day 29

Last night I went to a wine club party with Mark. He’s been in this wine club a year or so I think, and once a month they get together and everyone brings a bottle of wine and they have this tasting party like the one last night. It was often uncomfortable for me because Mark would leave me alone to go talk to his friends or to take pictures and I didn’t want to follow him everywhere to be introduced and impede his conversation. Interestingly, most of the people I met and talked to were also on the fringe of the group, a past roommate of the hostess, a woman from Germany here for two weeks visiting her friend who’s in the wine club, that sort of thing. Apparently all the people who knew each other in the wine club were talking to each other so that the people who didn’t know anyone met the other people who didn’t know anyone. Funny how that works. Making small talk with so many strangers like that feels like I’m at work or a CSCMP function, doing business networking. I never know what to talk to people about, and it seems like the only thing I can think to ask them about is their work and yet I don’t like talking about my work in a social setting. Catch 22, eh?

Eventually there was dancing though, and then I had a really good time. Later I commented to Mark that I could see why he was concerned about me going to South Dakota and not dancing. It was so great just to randomly freestyle with a bunch of people last night. I can’t really imagine not dancing for months. Then again, if chemo is bad, I won’t feel like dancing at all anyway, right?
