cancer – day 25
Aside from being ridiculously busy and still taking pain medication, today was kind of like a normal day. I started work at 6AM, and barely wrapped up by 3PM in order to spend a brief hour with my parents before leaving for the two-hour drive to Sac for my board meeting, then got out of that around 8PM, had another meeting/chat after that, and finally got out of that a little before 10PM. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fairly normal work day for me, with the exception being taking an hour break and visiting with my parents a little. I don’t have meetings in Sac every day, thankfully, our CSCMP board meeting is in-person only once a month or so. Usually if I’m driving in to Sac it’s for tango. 🙂
One frustrating thing . . . I don’t feel I’m nearly as efficient as I used to be, work-wise. I don’t specifically think about cancer stuff all the time, but I suspect it’s pretty close to the surface of my sub-conscious most of the time, generally raising my stress level higher than it needs to be for whatever I’m working on.
Then again, a week ago right now I was nearly incoherent with pain from the surgery. So to be back at my desk all day, and driving in to Sacramento by myself (Mom and Dad stayed at my house by themselves instead of driving me in) and running a board meeting pretty much like usual, well, dang, that’s pretty amazing. What a strange illness. I wonder what chemo will be like, in terms of effect on my work, ability to think, and so on? I’m sure I’ll be wiped out for at least some period of time after each chemo treatment . . . I’ve had problems with chronic fatigue before, so that seems likely to be a problem (since most people complain about that with chemotherapy), and I’m not sure how this not taking my heart medication is going to fly. Ah, still so many unknowns with chemo. I’m apparently still wondering about that a lot even when I think I’m working or thinking about something else, I guess!
