cancer – day 207

We just got back from the towing impound yard. Mark’s car is seriously totaled!

Right before the gracias milonga Friday night, Mark got a call from the police saying they had recovered his car and that it was at an impound yard in Natomas (an area in North Sac). They didn’t tell him anything about the condition of the car. Mark then called the impound yard to find out if they were open on Saturdays and ask if there was any damage on the car. The towing company woman told him she thought it had a flat tire but she wasn’t really sure what the condition of the car was. Then he called the insurance company, and their after-hours person told Mark that there wasn’t really anything to be done until Monday, and I think the gist of it was that the insurance company needed to send an assessor to look at the car.

But when Mark finally talked to his actual insurance rep this morning, the guy told him to go get the car, so we went up there not knowing at all what we’d see or if the car is at all driveable.

But . . . no way, Jose. That car is going nowhere unless it’s lifted onto a truck bed. The entire driver side was torn up, and the left front wheel was torn off! It looked like the axel was broken and the frame crunched in on the front driver corner. Of course the inside was a stripped out mess and the air bags had been triggered in the crash. There is no way this 1996 Acura isn’t totaled.

So now we’re back to the minivan idea. Mark wants to be able to haul workshop stuff around, and get more people in the van for tango trips to San Francisco and such. But of course a minivan costs more than his car was worth, so there’s the whole financial thing to work out, the question of getting the bandoneon, and knowing this house is going into foreclosure at some point Mark doesn’t know if there will be a garage for his workshop at the next place or how much it will cost and so on and so on. Lots of life stressers on top of dealing with a fatigued, neuropathized, radiation-burned, cancer patient. I don’t know how he deals with it all.
